Learn more about Teresa Graham Brett, J.D.
I have over 20 years experience in higher education and student affairs administration. Having served as a leader at three institutions in different regions of the United States, I have the breadth and depth to meet a wide variety of challenges.
The University of Arizona
I began my career in higher education as a student leader and went on to served in various leadership and administrative capacities in the Office of Minority Student Affairs, the University Learning Center, and Minority Student Services. I was responsible for leading academic support programs in the University Learning Center which, in collaboration with the academic colleges, were designed to increase success and achievement of ethnic minority and low-income students. I coordinated institutional efforts for academic integration and success of students of color in response to access and achievement goals set by the Arizona Board of Regents. I also served as primary divisional representative on student of color retention issues for the department and the director to administrators, including the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services and the Vice President for Student Affairs.
The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
After The University of Arizona, I moved to The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where I served as Co-Director of the Program on Intergroup Relations and Associate Dean of Students. As a member of the Division of Student Affairs Senior Leadership Team, I provided leadership for achieving divisional vision and mission, conducting goals setting and strategic planning, and managing financial and personnel resources. I was responsible for leadership of multiple units (Student Activities and Leadership, Intergroup Relations, International Center, Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Affairs) in the Office of the Dean of Students. I was able to create a collaborative team environment for staff and administrators. I worked closely with with academic units to respond to student needs. I handled student crisis intervention and response, as well as providing leadership for the Transforming Communities Project. While serving as Associate Dean of Students, I also provided direct leadership as Co-Director of the Program on Intergroup Relations. Along with my academic affairs co-director, we led an innovative curricular and co-curricular program for undergraduate University of Michigan students focusing on issues of social justice, intergroup relations, intergroup conflict, and community building.
The University of Texas at Austin
My final leadership position before starting my consulting business was as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at The University of Texas at Austin. I led the development and implementation of policies and programs related to the full range of student activities, needs and events on campus. I served as part of the leadership team of the Division of Student Affairs, as well as providing leadership to nine functional areas: Academic Enrichment Services, New Student Services, Services for Students with Disabilities, Student Activities and Leadership Development, Gender and Sexuality Center, Greek Life and Education, Student Governance, Student Judicial Services, and Volunteer and Service Learning Center. I worked collaboratively with the President, Deans, other administrative officers, faculty, staff and students. I was the lead administrator with responsibility for coordinating the university’s response to student emergencies and critical incidents. Although I was offered the position of Vice President for Student Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, I decided to leave the institution in order to have the flexibility to start my own consulting business.
